US film ‘Moonlight’ has won six awards including Best Feature at the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards, en route to winning an Oscar.
Barry Jenkins’ ‘Moonlight’ won awards for Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay, among three others, at the 2017 edition of the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California, on Saturday.
Experts are now pointing to the upcoming Academy Awards celebrations, saying ‘Moonlight’ may take home the Best Picture Award for the event as well.
“Four of the last five Film Independent Spirit Award winners for best feature have gone on to secure the best picture Oscar. But that wasn’t always the status quo. Rather, it’s indicative of the Academy Awards’ slow evolution into something resembling the Spirits,” the Variety magazine said in a report.
The 89th edition of the Academy Awards ceremony will be held on February 26, with Best Picture nominees, including ‘La La Land’, ‘Hell or High Water’, ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, ‘Arrival’, ‘Hidden Figures’, ‘Manchester by the Sea’, ‘Lion’, ‘Fences’ and ‘Moonlight’.
